Quote:
Gratitude is born in hearts that take time to count up past mercies.
~Charles E. Jefferson (1860-1937)

Instilling Gratefulness
Thanksgiving is a time to instill thankful hearts in your family. This Thanksgiving webpage will give you ideas for creating an atmosphere of thankfulness in your home.

Ways to instill gratefulness

  • Be grateful. You'll teach gratefulness by being an example.
  • Teach your family the value of hard work instead of giving them everything they want. It's okay to say "no" to your kids.
  • Have expectancies and then express thankfulness when expectancies are met. It's okay to "require" things from your family. You set the tone for what's expected. Be sure to thank family members for doing their part.
  • Take time to prepare a Thanksgiving feast and then enjoy the meal time together as a family.
  • Decorate your table to set the tone of the meal. Use the links under Thanksgiving Decorations below.
  • Have family members share verbally and/or in writing those people and/or things for which they they are thankful. As a parent, you can lead the way by sharing what you're thankful for and then asking others to share.
  • Pray together at the dinner table, giving thanks for the meal and for the things expressed in conversation.
  • Write your "thankful" list on a whiteboard or a piece of paper and post it somewhere as a reminder.
  • Do something for someone less fortunate. Serving others in need is sure to keep things in perspective and instill thankfulness for what you have.
To make Thanksgiving Day enjoyable for everyone, have a mentality that you will help out with the chores that go along with having a nice day.
  • Help straighten the house.
  • If there's snow, shovel the sidewalk.
  • Help prepare the meal.
  • Help set the table.
  • Take 5 minutes to tidy a bathroom.
  • Bring fresh flowers to your hosts' home.
  • Help clear the table after the meal.
  • Help load the dishwasher.
  • Help serve dessert.
  • Help with the children.

You can express thankfulness by helping out!
Put FUN and ENERGY into your everyday tasks
and be a blessing to those around you!
