Parenting
& Schooling Styles
by Andrea Simanson
Whether your child
attends a public school, a private school, or is homeschooled, it's
that time of year to begin preparing for school to begin.
Since our children attend a private school, I tend to write from that
perspective. I don't want to exclude anyone, however, so I have been
reading blogs of stay-at-home parents and working parents, and have
found that whatever a family chooses in the way of schooling, there are
reasons and values behind every situation. I admire the mom who stays
home with her child in those young
years. I admire the parent who home-schools their child. I also
appreciate working parents (I work outside the home!) and respect their
decision to educate their child outside the home. Whatever the needs of
your family, I support you in your pursuit to be a better parent!
There are so many opinions out there. Some parents are adamant that
their children be homeschooled because they do not support the
institution of education. Others homeschool their children, but do not
take such an adamant stand against the alternative schooling options.
Some parents are totally pro public education. Others are totally pro
private education. Some people are somewhere in between or atleast do
not have as strong convictions about where their children receive their
schooling, as long as their children learn and grow.
Education happens
in
all of life (at home, at school, at work, in social settings, actually
in all settings). Schooling is different in that academics are brought
into play. For me, I personally do not believe I could homeschool our
children and do them justice. I love them dearly and enjoy teaching and
training them in life skills, but academics - no thanks. I am grateful
for their teachers who are gifted and skilled at teaching. I know
others who homeschool and do a fantastic job with their children.
Whatever schooling choice you make as a family, I encourage you to be
involved parents. Get in there and meet your child's teacher. Make or
bake them a special treat and deliver it with a note of encouragement
and expectancy for a great year. If you homeschool, bake yourself a
treat and pat yourself on the back for taking on this responsibility
with your children.
