Successful Family Chore Game Rules

Principles of the game

For this game to have its full positive impact it needs to be played at two levels:

  1. The family level
  2. The individual level

What does it mean to play at the family level?

Playing at the family level means that each member's actions affect the family's score.  The family's score determines whether there is a family celebration or the loss of the family's ante.

What does it mean to play at the individual level?

Playing at the individual level means the player sets their Goals, Celebration and Ante that put a risk (usually with the guidance of the parent).  Their score determines whether they get to celebrate or lose their ante.

What is a Goal?

A goal is a standard of performance in terms of points.  A point is earned for each completed chore or double points are earned for completed bonus chores.

What is a Celebration?

A celebration is a fun activity or reward that is agreed to before-hand.  Its purpose is to build positive anticipation.

What is an Ante?

An ante is something that is put at risk as in a poker game.  Appropriate antes may include money or service.
